Songs of Deliverance?

It has occurred to me lately that one thing in seriously short supply in the world today is "hope". I read the Daily Mail yesterday, a fairly popular conservative tabloid newspaper published in Britain, and it was pretty depressing stuff. Freak weather, earthquakes, non-specific Islamic terrorist threats, expensive oil that's running out, chickens finally about to get their own back on us, economic meltdown, families in crisis and reality TV. It's enough to make you want to go inside, lock the door and keep the world at bay. There's not a lot of hope for the future. Sometimes the Christian Church doesn't quite help with an emphasis in eschatological theology, (I hope that's the right word), biased towards the "absolute annihalation of everything" scenario. (Apart from us, of course, who will get a handy escape in the nick of time).

So, I was thinking, since Jesus is the "Hope of the Nations" and the Gospel is the greatest message of hope for a lost and troubled world, we should now, more than ever, be writing songs of hope. Singing "songs that bring your hope" as Martin Smith ably put it, to this beautiful world that God loves so much but that is wallowing right now in hopelessness. So why not post a few songs of hope? Hope "built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness".

"How can it be that God is love, when blood runs down upon our land and fathers lose their only son? Where is the hope? Oh God, we pray for white ribbon day. And we pray for peace, to flood our hearts again … we long for joy to fill our streets again. Only God can save our nation now."
from "White Ribbon Day," taken from Delirious' album King of Fools.

"My Deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by. He will never break His promise — though the stars should break faith with the sky."
