Talking out of turn.

There has been a lot of talk recently about preaching being dead, a thing of the past. Yes preaching and preachers are having a rough time. It goes from "it's a dying art to people don't have the attention span anymore, to nobody learns anything by listening to a monologue to..." the list goes on. And it's always good to look at why you keep doing a something that is supposedly so ineffective and out of date.
Now bad preaching should be dead and buried. Some preachers bore the pants off us and people come to meetings expecting to be bored. It is the Protestant equivalent of flagellation.
But good peaching is here to stay! It is such utter rubbish to declare that what passes for good communication today will superceed Spirit empowered preaching. There is nothing so powerful and dynamic and life changing as a God inspired preach.
More tomorrow. I've got my dander up!

Perhaps your "danders up" because it's your particular gifting that's under discussion. Maybe one of the questions we can discuss is what is the difference between preaching and teaching. In the New Testament preaching is usually mentioned in respect of preaching the good news - the gospel. We use it in the context of the sermon given in church to people the majority of whom are christians.

Good teaching is vital as is good preaching to the people who need to hear the gospel. The problem with the sermon every sunday usually by the same preacher is that the truth is filtered by that one person's viewpoint, experience, social background etc.

Relax, nobody's saying that we should do away with 'the good preach', but we also shouldn't be afraid to ask questions of ourselves as a body - why we do things the way we do - without getting our dander up!

i enjoy good communication, effective communication, and the fact is most people do. That's why they love the movies, and comedy, and theatre etc.
it seems Jesus was a master storyteller and also an 'agitator' at times. Speaking as a human being, humans respond (one way or another) to being stimulated. I know as a musician I have to ask myself, 'if the crowd are going to sleep, am I guilty of applying the anesthetic?'
People who have never had the responsibility to lead meetings or get a message across to a crowd find it easy to be the critic. Hey guys this is not very easy. You try it for a while.
I loved the variety and depth and real-ness of most of what I heard in CFC. More churches should alternate speakers. There are several folks in almost any church with some good things to say about where God is taking them, what He is doing.
The idea that we must hold to the formats that were effective in the 18th or 19th century is useless, but good communication is good communication. People will respond to a vibrant message (which the gospel is!), delivered with true Holy Ghost passion (which He can give!) that can be applied in real life. I commend CFC on this point.

blessings to all

Barry
