Silver ring thing cont.
Activist is missing my point. I commended Lydia Playfoot for her decision not to have sex before her marriage. It was the decision to take this to court that I questioned. It's a jewellery issue not a moral one! I think it trivialises Christianity.
However I don't think wearing a ring to proclaim your chastity will have any more effect in preventing pre marital sex than not wearing one. Recent studies in the USA suggest that up to 88% of those wearing the silver ring HAD premarital sex anyway.
I suppose the factors that will help prevent pre marital sex are the same as they always were.
1 Devotion to Christ .
2 Fear of the Lord.
3 A crucifixion of the flesh.
4 A determination not to dishonour Christ's name.
5 Self control.
6 Don't put yourself in the way of temptation.
7 Don't get into the back seat of a car together.
8 I could go on but wearing a silver ring would not be among them.

Does a muslim headscarf trivialise that faith - after all its a fashion thing?
The simple ring is not really the issue. I dont think it is trivial to go to court over the PRINCIPLE here that this particular symbol is important to her expression of faith.
She has more guts than most.

(1) The laws and vehicles of justice in the world and those of God are different. (2) the Muslim headscarf is written in their understanding of God's law and is an official statement of their religion and faith. The silver ring is not one of Christianity, although the principle it claims to defend is. (3) if there is a law of the world that does not contradict the law of a religion (e.g. no jewelry in school), then we should abide by the law of the world and allow it to take precedence. In addition, making the ring statement outside of school is more admirable than in school. In school it breaks the law! If she wears that one single ring without other jewelry when out at a party or for a meal, then this is still a statement. If she openly proclaims chastity and achieves it via the 7-points in Paul's previous post, this is the true victory - not what she seeks in court. The latter will stir up hatred and waste money in court fees, which could be used for a more worthwhile cause.
