Why read it?
Before you try to get more people to read the Bible you have to explain to them why read it?
1 It is the only totally reliable information we have about God. It is God's revelation of Himself and His dealings with humankind. Yes I know we can see God everywhere but why take a bucket to the well to get water when you can have it pipped into the kitchen?
2 Through reading it we get an accurate picture of the life of Jesus who was God in the flesh. We can begin to understand why He came and what the implications are for us.
3 We use it as a mirror to hold up against our lives and our values and worldview. We CHANGE in response to it we don't change it to mirror us.
4 It is food for our souls. Any other practice divorced from the reading of Scripture, no matter how worthy, is ultimately a waste of time. All discipline must be rooted in Scripture and be shaped by it.
5 Christianity will become a meaningless ritual and be polluted by our own preferences if we don't know and practice what Scripture says. It is the living word and when applied by the Spirit brings life and health to us.
I'm sure there are a million more. Any ideas?

The Lord read, steeped himself in the scriptures and referred to them all the time. The scriptures were what prepared encouraged and gave Him strength and prepared him to face his most difficult times - during the temptation in the wilderness, at his trail, in the garden and on the cross. If he needed to read and studty the scriptures then how much more do we.
They give direction and guidance - immediate and future - lamp to my feet and light to my path.
Joshua 1 v 8 - if we abide by its principles it will help us to steer a clear course through lifes difficult journey and aviod unnecessary pitfalls.
It will help us overcome sin in our lives if we cooperate with the Holy Spirit - Psalm 119 vs 9&11 - Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way by taking heed thereto according to thy word. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.
It sustains us, builds us up and shows us what we have gained through Christ Acts 20 v 32
Just a few reasons - there are many others.
