Irrreducible minimums
I heard a sermon on how little we really need to make us disciples of Christ. I know what the preacher was getting at but I think he was confused. It seems to me that to talk about reducing Christianity to make life less cumbersome for for us is good and bad.
Good if we are talking about salvation. The only thing we need is faith in Christ. I met an old woman in the wilds of Kenya who had been healed from a serious illness. As she told her story it was obvious that when God revealed Himself to her she had NO knowledge of Him or the scriptures but she grasped the truth of the gospel that the Creator God had sent His own Son to die for her and thus make her right with God. She believed and was saved. End of story...not quite but as far as her salvation was concerned it was a done deal, she needed nothing else.
You see you can get saved on a hook of the gospel. Just a little piece of the truth is enough to put you in right relationship with God. If that is the irreducible minimum then I'm happy with that.
But it's a bit like landing in Paris in transit to the USA. Yes you've been to France but you really need to get out and explore for that to be experimentally true. Yes I want my passport stamped but I want more. The blood of Jesus is enough to get us into heaven but we need more [and more is provided] to get us safely there.
More tomorrow.
