Disintegrated Anticipation!

A number of years ago a friend offered me a critic of the "Charismatic Movement." He coined the phrase disintegrated anticipation. It meant that we are always looking for the next big thing to come along and solve all of our problems! And invariably it's not related to anything we are currently doing. Of course it never does and we still have to read scripture, pray and witness to a lost world. The latest fad comes and goes and wise Christians batten down the hatches in the knowledge that things will return to normal sooner or later. Did the church grow? Were lives changed? That remains to be seen but in my experience we are left with a few more disillusioned Christians and a needy world that still waits for the church to "wise up."
I once did a count of the things that were going to change everything and that have come and largely gone in the past twenty years; there were over thirty of them!
I think Christians in the west are desperate to see God move but be careful what you put your hope in.

I am curious. Do I dedect that perhaps Toronto wasn't all it was cracked up to be? Is the church now picking up the pieces? From my experience it seems the answer is yes and no. There are a great number of Christians for whom Toronto was and continues to be life changing. I think the interesting question your comment poses is; what is the place of revival within the history of the church?

Well said, good overview! I wonder whether the main point of Hebrews is relevant, about the need to press on to maturity and live in the good of the New Covenant continually abiding in the Presence in the holy of holies, as an already won and applicable experience, by faith, not by senses. Much of the " hunger to see God move" is actually translated into " let me experience something sensually", that is to say feel something, sense something, see or hear an audible voice because we believe that is more real than the spiritual realities we have by faith, O that we would know Him and enjoy Him with or without sensuous experiences, a both /and scenario,

Hi paul, great wisdom for such a young man!!
The practices/disciplines which have braught me safe thus far will also lead me home!

I am not against new things but our relationship with God (Father, Son & Spirit) outworked in our lives both inside and outside the community of the Redeemer are vital.
The Disciplines of prayer, worship, the Word, being a good husband and father over the long haul are foundational. I anticipate his mercy which is new every morning and that goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
I want to finish strong and well!

Sounds to me disintegrated anticipation is another phrase for 'God, you let me/us down' God will take a life time to solve all my problems cos, like we heard on Sunday, problems in life happen. Its back to that faith thing...walk by faith not by feelings, oh sorry sight,!? but I can't agree about the batten hatches and returning to normal. Our faith journey is surley opening the hatch ,with faith, hope and love in hand and doing the extra ordinary so the the world will see that our God can make a difference today and tomorrow.Thats been my story and I know its the story of so many of my friends

Paul I read an article I think it was in charisma magazine which said a certain church, and it may even have been CFC had moved away from revival rhetoric,[waiting for the next wave, and movement by translation], to mission and evangelism. I must say I liked that, and that is the issue for pentecostal and charismatic groups, always going for what is next, instead of keeping the main thing the main thing.
